Statement

Through the use of layered imagery in painting and drawing as well as imaginatively combined elements in mixed media works, I examine my relationship to the histories in the ground that lies below me. As a native of Nebraska, I am interested in the natural features such as the Platte River that have defined the passages through the state, from 19th century emigrant trails to the First Transcontinental Railroad, to Interstate 80 today. Throughout these periods, various technologies have shaped how the environment is perceived and remembered, from modes of travel to contemporary web mapping services. In my work, I reference the seams and distortions found in digital representations of the landscape to evoke an unsettled relationship between place and time.
